Honoring Veterans Day: A Tribute to Service, Sacrifice, and Family
By Anna D. Banks, MAS, CHBC
"On Veterans Day, we honor those who served—heroes whose courage, resilience, and dedication continue to inspire us every day."
Celebrating My Family’s Service
Veterans Day holds a special place in my heart, as it’s a time to honor my own family members who served with distinction. My sister, Sharon Pediford, served in the U.S. Army, dedicating years of her life to our country. My nephew, Charles Pediford, also served in the Army and received an honorable discharge, carrying on the family tradition of service. And in memory of my nephew, Robert Pediford, Jr., who served honorably in the U.S. Air Force and is no longer with us, we remember his sacrifice and commitment.
Each of them embodies the values we celebrate on Veterans Day—courage, resilience, and selflessness. Their service reminds me that leadership isn’t just about words; it’s about action, commitment, and showing up for something greater than yourself.
The Lessons Veterans Teach Us
From teamwork to resilience, veterans have life lessons that resonate beyond the military. Watching Sharon and Charles navigate civilian life with the same discipline and integrity they showed in service has taught me that true strength isn’t about avoiding challenges; it’s about facing them head-on. These are lessons we can all bring into our personal and professional lives.
Why Honoring Veterans Matters
Veterans Day is a reminder to honor the values of service, resilience, and sacrifice. For me, it’s a time to reflect on the incredible impact of my family members’ service and to carry forward their values in my life and work. This Veterans Day, I encourage everyone to take a moment to thank and honor the veterans in their lives—whether in your family or community. Let’s make sure their sacrifices are never forgotten.
